SYMPTOMS – WHO IS THE RIGHT CANDIDATE FOR EMSELLA®?

Did you know that up tp 40% of women and 11% of men in Australia suffer from urinary incontinence, the prevalence being higher in over 40-year-olds? Reference

Emsella is suitable for both men and women who suffer leakage of urine and poor bladder control, termed incontinence, seeking to improve their quality of life.

Symptoms – incontinence is frequent or affecting quality of life in men and women

Stress incontinence:

You suffer sudden or unexpected loss of bladder control when you cough, laugh, jump, exercise or sneeze, or with other quick movements

Urge incontinence – an overactive or irritable bladder:

You need to go and can’t hold on
You suffer urges to pass urine sometimes followed by accidental leakage.
You are constantly on the lookout for a bathroom.
You have a  frequent need to get to the toilet quickly (or you don’t get there in time).
You always need to know where the nearest toilet is.
The moment you reach home you are overwhelmed with the need to pass urine (key in the door syndrome).

Some people suffer MIXED stress and urgency symptoms.
And some patients suffer PERSISTENT incontinence symptoms following surgery for prolapse

Reduced Intimacy

Feel of vaginal looseness or laxity and difficulty with orgasm in women.
Erectile dysfunction and negative impact on intimacy in men.

UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES OF INCONTINENCE

In WOMEN incontinence can occur due to

  • Child-birth

  • Caesarean section or other surgeries – persistent leakage symptoms despite or following surgery for prolapse or stress incontinence

  • Illness

  • Physical trauma

  • Stress or Anxiety

  • Obesity – the excess pressure of weight on the pelvic floor can weaken the muscles.

  • Menopause

  • Advancing age

  • Unknown causes

In MEN incontinence can occur due to

  • Prostate enlargement

  • Prostate or other surgery

  • Prior infection

  • Illness

  • Stress or Anxiety

  • Obesity – the excess pressure of weight on the pelvic floor can weaken the muscles

  • Advancing Age

  • Unknown causes

HOW DOES EMSELLA WORK?

PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISES help retrain the pelvic floor to regain bladder control. but there are challenges with completing pelvic floor exercises, or Kegel exercises on your own.  It can be hard to know if you’re actually doing the exercises correctly, and holding a maximum voluntary contraction for several seconds. Access to and avaialability of specialised physiotherapists for a supervised program may be limited. And as a patient you need to do homework – doing the exercises three times a day!

A SIMPLE SOLUTION IS THE EMSELLA!

The Emsella uses high intensity focused electromagnetic technology or HIFEM® procedure that utilises safe electromagnetic energy at a high frequency to cause pelvic floor muscle stimulation.
The energy penetrates deep and stimulates the entire pelvic floor muscle motor neurons helping restore neuromuscular control.

Emsella delivers the equivalent of 11,200 pelvic floor supramaximal contractions over the 28-minute session, which you would not be able to do on your own. A key factor in “re-educating” the pelvic floor muscle to contract and function as it should.

These are stronger, focussed and more effective than usual Kegel exercises. The supramaximal contraction builds and holds much stronger tension than maximal voluntary contractions, making each session more powerful than a three month pelvic floor exercise program.

The results are therefore much quicker than using exercises alone to treat the issue.

These contractions lead to muscle strengthening of the pelvic floor and are useful in muscle re-education.

This leads to reduced pelvic floor laxity, restoration of bladder control and an end to incontinence.

Scientific research shows that 95% of treated patients have reported significant improvement in the quality of life. Read more about the study here.

ABOUT SEXUAL FUNCTION

Emsella was originally designed to treat urinary incontinence in women. As patients were receiving treatments, they were also noting enhanced sexual function and orgasms. This led the manufacturer BTL’s physicians to research and put forward studies specifically toward sexual enhancement in men and women. This was an unexpected reaction for patients who were being treated for incontinence, however it opened up the potentials of HIFEM technology. In 2020, the FDA approved the sexual function protocol on Emsella and physicians are currently using EMSELLA to treat erectile dysfunction.

Patients experience enhanced sexual function through improved sensitivity and pleasure, along with treatment of urinary incontinence.

WHO IS EMSELLA NOT SUITABLE FOR

Before your first consultation we will send you a Checklist to read with medical conditions you may have and which may preclude the use of the Emsella. We ask that you inform us if you have any of the following before your first appointment:

  • uncontrolled bleeding disorder

  • hip joint replacement

  • femoral artery stent

  • cardiac pacemakers

  • implanted defibrillators

  • implanted neurostimulators

  • electronic implants

  • drug pumps

  • malignant tumour

  • fever

  • certain previous surgeries

  • warfarin therapy

  • undergoing cancer treatment

Dr Shikha Parmar, GP,  will go through this with you during your first consultation to ensure you don’t have a medical condition precluding the use of electromagnetic energy.

THE EMSELLA TREATMENT EXPERIENCE

During the Emsella treatment, you sit on the chair fully clothed.

The device sends precise levels of electromagnetic energy into your muscles. This creates contractions in the muscles which strengthen the pelvic floor and bladder control reducing incontinence.

You will experience tingling and pelvic floor muscles contractions during the procedure. But it is comfortable and painless.

You may resume daily activities immediately after the treatment, there is no recovery time or downtime.

THE TREATMENT FREQUENCY, AND RESULTS

You will have an initial consultation with our GP  Dr Shikha Parmar to discuss EMSELLA treatment. She will tailor the treatment plan and review your progress.

A typical treatment takes 28 minutes, you remain clothed and it is painless.

You will need a minimum of 6 sessions, but in some cases up to 10, scheduled twice a week. These will be monitored by Dr Parmar and are expected to achieve sustained results that can last up to six months.

Some people observe improvement after a single session but for others the results are noticeable after subsequent sessions. You may find that your symptoms may get worse before they start to get better due to some initial pelvic floor muscle fatigue. Most patients benefit following the first set of treatments, but results will typically continue to improve over the next few weeks.

Prior to the first treatment, an incontinence questionnaire is conducted to determine the severity of your condition. Three months later you the questionnaire is repeated to measure the improvement.

As the pelvic floor is a muscle, to sustain its strength continuing pelvic floor exercises or having top-up Emsella sessions every few months will help maintain results.  Dr Parmar will discuss the appropriate number of treatments for you during your consultation depending on the severity of your condition, age, symptoms and health, and your individual response to treatment. If you had minor incontinence, you may never need Emsella again. If you had more severe incontinence, you may need 2 top-up treatments 3 monthly for the first year, then less frequently.

Patients with minor incontinence may not require further treatment. Moderate or severe symptoms may necessitate 1 to 2 maintenance treatments every 3 to 12 months and will be discussed in clinic following your initial treatment plan, to achieve a good, long-lasting outcome.

Some patients will benefit from periodic maintenance treatments every 6 months to 2 years. Dr Parmar will reassess and create a treatment plan for you.

As with any medical treatment regimen we cannot give guarantees about the effectiveness of our treatment for any particular individual.  Symptoms are reviewed 3 months following the upfront sessions. If there is no obvious benefit at all after 3 months then further treatment will not be recommended.

95% of our Emsella patients report noticeable relief from stress incontinence and/or hyperactive bladder after appropriate treatment.

Our technologies are painless, safe, proven medical treatments.

WHAT IS THE COST? INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL

The first consultation is with our GP Dr Shikha Parmar to assess your symptoms and overall health to ensure Emsella is appropriate for you. A treatment plan will be outlined. The cost of this 60 minute consultation which includes a full session on the Emsella chair is $240.10, of which $80.10 will be rebated by Medicare (out of pocket cost is $160).

Generally it is recommended to have 6 sessions up front, (5 more following the first session) on the Emsella chair, twice a week for 3 weeks. The package is charged at $1050, equating to $210 per session, saving of $40 per session. Some patients with more severe or long-standing problems will be advised to have 2 to 4 further sessions up front (total of 8-10 sessions rather than 6) and this will be determined by Dr Parmar at the first consultation. Discounted package rates apply equating to $210/session. Your progress will be monitored by Dr Parmar. No Medicare rebates apply to follow-up sessions.

Patients with minor incontinence may not require further treatment. Moderate or severe symptoms may necessitate 1 to 2 maintenance treatments every 3 to 12 months and will be discussed in clinic following your initial treatment plan. Individual follow-up sessions are charged at $250/session.

Fees may be subject to change and will be confirmed with you at the time of booking.

Some patients may be eligible for the Australia Government Continence Aids Payment Scheme (CAPS). Find out more here or download our information.
